Steel Strung Acoustic Guitars

Acoustic guitars of various sizes and shapes, such as OM, 0, 00, 000, Parlour, Dreadnaught, Slope-shouldered Dreadnaught, Folk, Jumbo, Mini-Jumbo, or Traveller - though some builders have their own body shape and name. The width of fret-board at the nut can vary between 43mm and 47mm, and the profile of the neck will vary widely between makes. Scale length is usually between 25"-26" except for Parlor guitars (24") and travel guitars, which can be as little as 21.5"

Acoustic guitars are always strung with steel strings - that is to say the core of the string is steel. The four wound strings (6, 5, 4 & 3) are normally wound with either Bronze or Phosphor bronze. Acoustic guitars are constructed to withstand the extra tension of steel strings, and have either a steel reinforced neck or have a truss rod in the neck. On some acoustics the headstock may be slotted, but even here only steel strings should be used. The bridge is always fixed.
