Dreadnaught and Jumbo Acoustic Guitars
The ‘Dreadnaught’ shape is possibly the most common shape of guitar currently in production today, and it was Martin who designed and named it. The body size is larger than a classical, and the design is far less curvaceous than any other guitar shape – that is to say it has a thicker waist.
The Jumbo shape is exemplified by guitars such as the Gibson J200 and the Guild F50, and as the name implies is a very large-bodied and curvaceous guitar with a strong bass. These are sometimes popular with taller players with long arms, who find the size suits them better. The bass is powerful, but builders need to beware that the bass is not significantly louder than the mid and treble ranges.
Mini-Jumbos are (as the name implies) the same shape as full-sized Jumbos, only somewhat smaller.
NB Confusingly, Gibson also has some Dreadnaught (and Slope-Shouldered Dreadnaught)-shaped designs which it also calls Jumbo – the Gibson J45, for example. This has led to a great deal of confusion, and it has become necessary to constantly clarify and explain the difference between these two shapes.
