Acoustic Folk Guitars

Folk guitars fall into two catagories:

1) Steel-strung (acoustics) with the body shape and size of a classical, but the neck width of an acoustic. These have a steel-reinforced neck or a truss rod in the neck and should be strung with steel strings. New folk guitars are almost all of this type. Folk guitars in this first category have a fixed bridge do not have slotted headstocks

2) Folk guitars with a chunky but non-rienforced neck, but nevertheless the neck width of an acoustic. They are designed either to take Savarez Argentines (or similar very low tension strings) such as are used on Gypsy Jazz guitars, although nylon stings can be used (though these are less suitable). Guitars in this second category often have slotted headstocks, but not always. They often have a tailpiece and floating bridge, though some have a fixed brige. The body shape, whilst small, may be more similar to a 000 or OM shape than to a classical, whilst the depth will be less, similar to a flamenco. Folk guitars in this category have become very unfashionable and to the best of our knowledge are no longer produced.
